Taryn Sabia serves as Assistant Dean for Research at the University of South Florida’s College of Design, Art & Performance. She previously directed the Florida Center for Community Design and Research, where she led more than 40 public projects and helped secure over $4 million in sponsored research focused on creating stronger, more connected communities.
As co-founder of Urban Charrette, a Tampa-based nonprofit, Taryn has spent years bringing residents, local leaders, businesses, and institutions together to solve complex community challenges. She has facilitated more than 150 public workshops and advised over 30 mayors nationwide on urban planning, accessibility, and neighborhood development.
Born legally blind, Taryn brings a deeply personal perspective to accessibility, inclusion, and designing cities that work for everyone. She is also a wife and mother who understands the everyday challenges families face — from affordability and transportation to creating safe, connected neighborhoods where people can thrive.
Tampa deserves leadership that listens, collaborates, and plans for the future without losing sight of the people who call this city home.
Taryn’s campaign is focused on practical, people-first solutions that make Tampa more affordable, connected, resilient, and responsive to the community.
Taryn will pursue coordinated housing and transportation strategies that reduce everyday costs, expand diverse housing options, and ensure growth happens in the right places to support long-term affordability.
Taryn will advocate for meaningful transit, safer streets, and walkable communities to lower transportation costs, reduce congestion, and improve daily quality of life across Tampa’s neighborhoods.
Taryn will streamline permitting, improve transparency, and expand technical support so small businesses can open faster, grow sustainably, and continue to strengthen Tampa’s local economy.
Taryn will advance data-driven planning that addresses climate risk, flood resilience, and infrastructure needs while protecting neighborhood character and keeping community voices central in decision-making.
Taryn will strengthen partnerships with local schools, colleges, and training programs to support workforce development, neighborhood stability, and expanded opportunities for residents across Tampa.
Taryn will work directly with residents, business owners, and community leaders to co-create programs that reflect real needs, maximize impact, and ensure policies are shaped by the people they serve.
